Zoomatron: a whole new way to look at charts

NOAA Charts and Virtual Earth

Choose a state from the dropdown to the left, and then pick a chart to look at.

These are government-issue navigation charts overlaid on the Virtual Earth (http://local.live.com) map of the United States. You get all the advantages of both - the detailed navigation of the charts and the draggable, zoomable mappiness of the maps. You can make the charts translucent so you can see the map through it.

For fun, check out the Images link for unusual ways to play with the Virtual Earth mapping tools.

Here's a Test chart to see how charts look in the new 3D beta.

New! The Virtual Earth tem has fixed a problem in IE 7 where transparent images show with big black streaks.  I made the backgrounds over land transparent in some of the latest charts I added. They finally look good now. You can see the land features even when the chart is set to be opaque. They will release a fix for IE 6 soon. Firefox transparency has always worked.

Disclaimer!

Don't use these charts for navigation! I'm not updating the charts with the Notices to Mariners, and the process of putting them on the web isn't exact. In places the chart could be hundreds of feet off of the actual location.
